Social scientists have a high responsibility in their professions. They do not only play an important role in maintaining their neutrality but also actively involve in advancing their nations and humanitarian civilization globally, as Hans Antlov suggested inHadiz and Dhakidae’sSocial Science and Power in Indonesia:
”The failure of authoritarian nation-building project in Indonesia cannot be separated from the role of social sciences. The contribution of social scientists, such as to analyze social structure, power relation and state institution, are closely related to the growth of democracy. Furthermore, scholars and researchers starting to oppose the Indonesian system by voicing their right to be free from state ideology. They realized that only as outsiders from power relation, the social scientists can freely scrutinize political, social and economic process in Indonesian government system. As a result they can contribute to establish democratic and diverse society..” (Hadiz and Dhakidae, 2006:xx).
The quote encourages social scientists to improve their role in establishing welfare society. Additionally, globalization to some extent also affect the way of human life that some of them disregard their social political and economic condition. This situation caused people to become ignorantand have little sense of social crisis. Ignoring the role of social scientists by having less sense of social crisis would bring an impact on the diminishment of their contribution toward nation building and prospertiy of their nation. Therefore, it is rational to improve and discussvarious social phenomena and education from different perspectives in the context of social sciences and education.
In line with this rationality, Faculty of Social Sciences Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP) is holding the International Conference on Social Sciences and Education (ICSScE) to comprehend objectively and critically various kinds of social issues and education phenomena, which is expected to provide alternative solutions. This scientific forum takes panel discussion and facilitates discussion about social sciences and education for scholars in the fields, particularly social science approaches including geography, history, sociology, anthropology, international relations, nationality, civic education, political science, state administration, legal studies, and the science of education as the main focus of UNP as the Teacher Training Institute (LPTK).
